Johannes van der Plicht is an Associate Professor at Leiden University and an external member of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen's Isotope Research department. His work focuses on radiocarbon dating, accelerator mass spectrometry, and paleoenvironmental studies, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable cities. He holds a position since 2004 at Leiden and has been affiliated with Groningen since 2009.
Research Interests: Holocene and Pleistocene environmental changes, archaeological chronology, isotopic analysis of organic materials, and applications of radiocarbon dating in multidisciplinary studies such as manuscript authentication and paleoecology. Recent work includes innovative methods for marine shell dating and AI integration in cultural heritage analysis.
Recent Research Trends: His publications emphasize methodological advancements in radiocarbon dating techniques, interdisciplinary approaches combining isotopic data with AI, and paleoecological reconstructions across Europe and Siberia. Key topics include Arctic faunal history, megafaunal extinction dynamics, and isotopic signatures in archaeological remains.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Isotope Research group at Groningen and collaborates internationally on projects involving paleoclimate reconstruction and archaeological dating.
