Professor Sonia Zakrzewski is a bioarchaeologist at the University of Southampton's Department of Archaeology, specializing in human skeletons to study migration, identity, and disease in past populations. Her research focuses on ancient Egypt, medieval burial practices, and the bioarchaeology of disAbility. She collaborates with Bioengineering on CT imaging for dental and locomotor studies. Current roles include leading research groups like the Centre for the Archaeology of Human Origins (CAHO) and Bioarchaeology and Osteoarchaeology at Southampton (BOS).
Education: Former Addison Wheeler Research Fellow at Durham University. Teaching focuses on bioarchaeology and Egyptian studies. Awards include Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries. External roles include Chair of the Paleopathology Association (2014–2017) and Scientific Advisory Board member of Vienna's Naturhistorisches Museum. Supervises five PhD students exploring topics like leprosy, Roman mortuary practices, and Egyptian identity.
