Neil Carlin is an Associate Professor in the School of Archaeology at University College Dublin (UCD). His academic roles include serving as Head of Teaching & Learning (2020–2023) and a member of the Teaching & Learning Committee in the College of Social Sciences & Law. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from UCD (2001), a M.A. in Archaeology from Queen's University Belfast (2005), and a Ph.D. in Archaeology from UCD (2011). He completed an IRC-funded postdoctoral fellowship (2012–2014) studying Grooved Ware in Ireland.
Carlin's research focuses on Neolithic and Bronze Age Ireland and Britain, emphasizing social practices, material culture, and chronology. His projects include the 'Project Radiocarbon' (2021–2024), creating a transnational radiocarbon database, and 'TIME' (2020–2024), examining social change in prehistoric Britain and Ireland. His work challenges traditional narratives, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches and critical theory.
His articles address topics like kinship through genetic and archaeological evidence, radiocarbon big data, and Neolithic burial practices. Awards include the R.M. Baguley Award (2018) for best Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society paper and UCD Teaching Excellence Award (2017). Carlin teaches modules on Irish archaeology, archaeological theory, and cultural heritage, emphasizing active learning and critical thinking.
