Professor Alison Bowes serves as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor in Sociology at the University of Stirling. With a career spanning over four decades at the institution since 1977, she has established herself as a leading academic in social sciences with particular expertise in ageing and dementia research.
Professor Bowes earned her academic foundation with BA and PhD degrees in Social Anthropology from the University of Durham. Her professional journey at Stirling began as a Lecturer in Sociology, progressed to Professor in 2001, and included significant leadership roles as Head of the Department of Applied Social Science (1999-2004) and Chair in Dementia Research (2008-2011).
Her scholarly focus centers on the provision of services to older people and minority ethnic groups, with particular expertise in qualitative research methods and working with socially excluded populations. Professor Bowes conducts interdisciplinary research on funding long term care for older people, addressing critical social policy challenges.
Professor Bowes is actively engaged with several research entities at the University of Stirling:

As an educator, she coordinates two key courses: ASRP01-The Nature of Social Inquiry and ASRP10-Dissertation. With 77 documented research outputs and 37 research projects, her work continues to influence policy and practice in ageing services and dementia care.
