Dr. Bridgitte Swales serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport at the University of Stirling, specializing in physical activity research for older adult populations. Her work primarily focuses on interventions for frail and pre-frail older adults in residential care settings.
Dr. Swales' research interests center on physical activity interventions for aging populations, with particular expertise in resistance training programs for frail older adults in residential care. Her work examines the reliability of strength assessments in geriatric populations and investigates how social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted physical activity levels, social engagement, and wellbeing among Scottish older adults. Her research employs mixed methods approaches, combining quantitative assessments with qualitative insights to develop evidence-based interventions that improve multi-dimensional health outcomes for elderly populations.
Dr. Swales has been actively involved in the Stirling Physical Activity Research, Knowledge & Learning Exchange (SPARKLE) and the Physiology, Exercise and Nutrition Research group. Her work is closely aligned with the University's Ageing and Dementia and Health & Behaviour research programmes, contributing to the broader Living Well research theme.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent output in high-impact gerontology and public health journals, with a clear trajectory examining physical activity interventions for vulnerable elderly populations, particularly during the challenging context of the pandemic. Her most recent work continues to advance the field of exercise science for aging populations through rigorous feasibility studies and methodological improvements in strength assessment.
