Alexander Shuhan serves as Professor of Horn in the Department of Music Performance at Ithaca College's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. He holds principal horn positions with the Binghamton Philharmonic and Fort Smith Symphony while frequently performing with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival.
His educational background includes studies at Southern Methodist University (Greg Hustis), Eastman School of Music (Verne Reynolds), and Juilliard School Pre-College Division (Harry Berv), with additional instruction from Marvin Howe, Nancy Cochran, John Jacobsen, and Henry Babcock.
Shuhan's professional focus centers on advanced horn performance techniques, contemporary brass composition, and innovative pedagogy. His research extends to Suzuki Method adaptation for horn instruction, evidenced by his pursuit to become the world's first certified Suzuki Horn teacher. Creative work includes original compositions for brass ensembles, exploring tonal textures and rhythmic structures within classical frameworks.
As founding member of Rhythm & Brass since 1993, he has shaped the ensemble's international touring repertoire through collaborative composition and arrangement projects, significantly contributing to modern brass chamber music literature.
