W. Peter Kurau is a Professor of Horn and Director of the Eastman Horn Choir at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He has been a full-time faculty member since 1995 and serves as Principal Horn of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 2004. His roles include teaching, performing with Eastman Brass, and leading international master classes.
Education: Studied at the Eastman School, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal College of Music, University of Connecticut, and Florida State University, under mentors like Verne Reynolds and David Cripps.
Research interests focus on horn performance, pedagogy, and commissioning new works by composers such as Verne Reynolds and Yehudi Wyner. He is celebrated for his 1991 performance of the Mozart Rondo K.371 reconstruction.
Awards include the I.H.S. Punto Award (2016) and recognition through international performances and ambassadorial roles.
Active in professional organizations: Served on the International Horn Society’s Advisory Council, as Vice-President, and hosted their 29th Annual Workshop. Involved in festivals and clinics globally, including Finland, Germany, and South Korea.
Notable contributions include premiering compositions and advocating for horn repertoire through teaching and performance.
