Professor Aled Jones is the Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Plymouth, part of the Faculty of Health. He holds dual roles as a Professor of Patient Safety & Healthcare Quality and a Non-Executive Director at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. His research focuses on patient safety, healthcare quality improvement, implementation science, and the interplay between workforce deployment, workplace culture, and staff wellbeing. He leads interdisciplinary projects addressing unprofessional behaviors in healthcare settings, nurse staffing systems, and continuity of care models in maternity care.
Research interests include healthcare leadership during crises, strategies to enhance staff resilience, and mitigating workforce-related risks to patient safety. His work spans qualitative and mixed-methods studies, policy analysis, and international comparative research. Notable projects include the SIMCA study on midwifery continuity of care and realist reviews exploring interventions to reduce unprofessional behaviors.
Recent publications analyze organizational dynamics in NHS Wales, executive nurse leadership during the pandemic, and barriers to student retention in nursing/midwifery programs. His work consistently bridges academic research with practical healthcare system improvements.
Prof. Jones has contributed to national initiatives like the NHS Freedom to Speak Up Guardians program and collaborates with international partners on mental health care planning and workforce resilience.
