Dr. Alan Collins is a Senior Lecturer in Food Business and Development at Cork University Business School, University College Cork, where he has been a program director continuously since 2001. His academic work bridges sociology, economics, and marketing disciplines with practical industry experience.
His research interests focus on food retailing systems, supply chain dynamics, and consumer behavior patterns. Dr. Collins approaches his work from both positivist and interpretivist perspectives, with recent emphasis on consumer culture theory and engagement theory as applied to food consumption and health behaviors. His interdisciplinary background informs his unique perspective on how retail strategies impact indigenous supplier bases and channel relationships.
Dr. Collins has published in prestigious ABS 3 journals including Supply Chain Management: an International Journal, Journal of Marketing Management, and European Journal of Marketing. His recent research explores search-related consumer activities including price and promotional search, and introduces the concept of Store Brandscape as a new consumer heuristic.
As an educator, he has directed multiple academic programs including industry programs in retailing (2001-2010), MSc/MBS Food Marketing (2002-2016), and the current BSc Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship (2016-present). His practical industry experience spans working at Cork's English Market, Tesco UK, and extensive collaboration with Musgrave and Supervalu retailers as both educator and store of the year adjudicator.
