Al Courey is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and serves as the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence. His research focuses on the molecular basis of development using Drosophila as a model system, integrating biochemical and genetic approaches to study transcriptional regulation, Sumo-conjugation, and their implications for human health.
- Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College
- PhD in Biochemistry from Harvard University
Courey's work explores how transcription factors like Dorsal establish embryonic polarity through gradient formation and signal transduction cascades. His lab investigates the roles of Groucho as a corepressor in chromatin remodeling and the function of SUMOylation in nuclear import, immune response, and stress adaptation.
Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary applications of SUMO as a solubility tag and its interactions with histone deacetylases. His research spans developmental biology, molecular genetics, and protein biochemistry, with implications for understanding human diseases linked to transcriptional dysregulation.
- Scientific Awards: American Cancer Society Post-doctoral Fellowship, Searle Scholars Award, Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award
Courey has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate researchers, including current students Joseph Cao, Michael Chambers, and Pak Ning Kwong. His lab's collaborative environment has produced significant insights into gene regulatory networks and epigenetic mechanisms.
