Abiodun Williams is a Professor of the Practice of International Politics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University. He holds dual appointments and has held leadership roles such as Director of the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts (2017–2022) and President of The Hague Institute for Global Justice (2013–2016). With extensive UN experience, he served as Director of Strategic Planning for UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon (2001–2007), and led UN peacekeeping operations in North Macedonia, Bosnia, and Haiti (1994–2000).
His education includes a PhD and MALD from The Fletcher School, and an MA (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh. Research focuses on the United Nations, conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). He has authored over 20 books and articles, including works on Kofi Annan’s leadership and UN peacebuilding architecture.
Professional activities include board memberships with the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters and the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS). Awards include the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award (Tufts) and the Constantine E. Maguire Medal (Georgetown).
Teaching spans courses on global institutions, Africa’s global politics, and leadership, reflecting his commitment to bridging academic and practical dimensions of international affairs.
