Ian Johnstone is a Professor of International Law at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, where he has served since 2000. He held leadership roles as Interim Dean (2018–2019) and Academic Dean (2013–2015). Prior to academia, he worked at the United Nations, including positions in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and Department of Peacekeeping Operations. His research focuses on international organizations, the United Nations, peace operations, and international law's intersection with political theory. Johnstone has authored/co-edited influential works such as Law and Practice of the United Nations and The Oxford Handbook on International Organizations.
He holds an LL.M. from Columbia University, JD and BA from the University of Toronto. His professional activities include editorial roles for journals like International Organizations Law Review and memberships in bodies like the International Peace Institute’s Advisory Board. He received the James L. Paddock Teaching Award (2005) and has contributed to major initiatives like the Annual Review of Global Peace Operations (2005–2007).
Johnstone’s recent work addresses cybersecurity governance, legal argumentation beyond courts, and UN reform. He teaches courses on international organizations, peace operations, and global security governance. His grants include leadership roles in the Strategies to Prevent Spillover (STOP Spillover) program funded by USAID (2020–2025), focusing on transdisciplinary approaches to pandemic prevention.
