Klaus Scharioth is a Professor of the Practice at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, and concurrently serves as Dean of the Mercator College for International Affairs in Germany. With over 35 years in the German Foreign Service (1976–2011), he held pivotal roles including German Ambassador to the US (2006–2011) and State Secretary of the German Foreign Office (2002–2006). His career included leadership positions such as Political Director of the German Foreign Office, Head of the Office of the German Foreign Minister, and Vice Chairman of UN Committees. He holds a German Law Degree, Ph.D., MALD, and MA from The Fletcher School.
His research interests focus on international law, global governance, and foreign policy strategies. He is affiliated with the Transatlantic Academy (non-resident Fellow), Humanity in Action (board member), Istanbul Policy Center (advisory council), and the European Council on Foreign Relations. His honorary doctoral degrees reflect recognition of his contributions to international affairs.
