Ümit Atlamaz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Boğaziçi University. His academic work bridges theoretical linguistics and computational approaches, with expertise spanning multiple language families including Turkish, Kurmanji, Laz, and South Asian languages. His research focuses on theoretical morphosyntax (case theory, agreement phenomena, differential object marking, and null arguments) and computational linguistics (neural network capabilities, natural language inference, sentiment analysis, and ontological representations). Recent publications demonstrate a growing integration of these strands, particularly in applying computational methods to typologically diverse languages like Turkish and Laz. His publication trends reveal a consistent focus on case-agreement interactions across theoretical and computational frameworks. The most recent works (2021-2023) increasingly combine formal syntactic analysis with computational applications, particularly in Turkish NLP benchmarking and morphological analysis. Key recurring themes include split-ergativity patterns, heritage language syntax, and the morphosyntactic properties of under-resourced languages. At Boğaziçi University, Atlamaz co-organizes the ST@BU (Syntactic Theory at Boğaziçi University) reading group with Ömer Demirok, focusing on advanced syntactic theory. Supported by Metin Bağrıaçık, Sumru Özsoy, and Balkız Öztürk, this bi-weekly forum examines topics like case theory and agreement systems. He teaches courses including Syntax and Semantics of Modern Turkish and Computational Methods in Linguistics , reflecting his dual research interests. Prior to academia, he applied his linguistic expertise in NLP roles at Facebook and Google.
