Lucas Champollion is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at New York University (NYU), affiliated with the College of Arts & Science. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in Engineering in Computer and Information Science from Penn. His postdoctoral research was conducted at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.
Champollion's research focuses on formal semantics of natural language, particularly algebraic semantics and mereology, with applications to distributivity, aspect, and measurement. He also explores computational linguistics and formal language theory. His work bridges linguistics with philosophy and computer science, emphasizing compositional semantics and event semantics. Notable contributions include his book *Parts of a Whole: Distributivity as a Bridge Between Aspect and Measurement* (2017), which unifies theories of distributivity, aspect, and measurement using algebraic frameworks.
His articles address topics such as negation and modality in truthmaker semantics, counterfactuals, donkey sentences, and free choice disjunction. Recent work (2024) explores negation's role in modal contexts, while earlier studies (2016) analyze distributivity in event semantics. He has also contributed to computational tools like the Penn Lambda Calculator for teaching formal semantics.
Awarded a Humboldt fellowship (2023–2025) for research at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP), he is on leave from NYU until August 2025. His teaching spans undergraduate courses in linguistics and computational linguistics, as well as graduate-level seminars in semantics. He frequently teaches at summer schools, including ESSLLI and NASSLLI, focusing on algebraic semantics and mereology.
Champollion's work intersects with experimental semantics and pragmatics, integrating theoretical insights with empirical methods. His research emphasizes the interplay between syntax, semantics, and computational models, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
