Nancy J. Philp, PhD, serves as Professor in the Department of Pathology & Genomic Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and Associate Dean for PhD & MD/PhD Programs within the Jefferson College of Life Sciences. She earned her PhD from the University of Michigan in 1995. Dr. Philp's research investigates metabolic homeostasis in the retina, specializing in monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) and CD147 within the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Her laboratory employs genetic, biochemical, and imaging techniques to study how MCTs facilitate lactate transport between Müller glial cells and photoreceptors, with discoveries including MCT3's basolateral expression in RPE. Current projects examine tissue-specific trafficking of transporter proteins, MCT12's role in cataract formation, SLC16A8 regulation in aging, and tissue factor's dual functions in oxidative stress and epiretinal membrane development. As Associate Dean, she oversees graduate education programs while leading a research laboratory focused on retinal metabolism and transporter biology.
