Scott E. Counts is an Associate Professor of Translational Neuroscience at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, based at the Grand Rapids Research Center. He holds a secondary appointment in Family Medicine. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal vulnerability in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and vascular contributions to dementia progression. His lab employs advanced techniques like laser capture microdissection, RNA sequencing, and in vivo gene transfer to study neurodegenerative pathways.
Education:
- B.A. in History and English, Davidson College (1986)
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Emory University School of Medicine (2000)
Research Interests: Dr. Counts investigates noradrenergic locus coeruleus degeneration's impact on cerebrovascular function in AD models, biomarker development, and vascular-neuronal interactions in dementia. His work bridges molecular pathology with clinical outcomes to identify disease-modifying therapies.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Counts Lab, collaborating on projects involving rodent models, human tissue analysis, and neurovascular dysfunction studies. Collaborators include experts in neuroimaging (Dorrance, Lipton) and dementia biomarkers.
