Mark S. Humayun

Mark S. Humayun is a University Professor at the University of Southern California (USC), holding joint appointments in the Keck School of Medicine and the Viterbi School of Engineering. He serves as Director of the USC Ginsburg Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics and Co-Director of the USC Roski Eye Institute. His expertise lies at the intersection of ophthalmology, biomedical engineering, and stem cell biology. Humayun earned his MD from Duke University and PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He pioneered the Argus II retinal implant, the first FDA-approved bionic eye for restoring vision in the blind, for which he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (2016).

His research focuses on retinal prosthetics, stem cell therapies, and non-invasive neurostimulation techniques. Key contributions include advancements in ultrasound-based vision restoration and bioengineered retinal implants. Humayun has over 300 publications and 140 patents, with awards such as the IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology (2020) and ARVO Fellow (2022). His work bridges clinical practice and engineering, addressing retinal degeneration and macular diseases through innovative technologies.

Notable achievements include leading the development of the Argus II, which has restored partial vision to patients with retinitis pigmentosa. Current research explores next-generation implants, stem cell-derived RPE therapies, and ultrasonic stimulation for broader vision restoration. His interdisciplinary teams collaborate across engineering, computer science, and medicine to tackle complex ophthalmic challenges.
