Gerta Hoxhaj is an Assistant Professor at the Children's Medical Center Research Institute (CRI) at UT Southwestern Medical Center, with secondary appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry and Pediatrics. She leads an active research laboratory focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer metabolism. Dr. Hoxhaj received her academic training through the following institutions: Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Chemistry from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Cell Signaling from the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit, University of Dundee, Scotland, UK Dr. Hoxhaj's research program centers on understanding how cancer cells rewire their metabolism to support growth and survival. Her laboratory investigates three fundamental questions: how cells integrate oncogenic signals to regulate metabolic activities; how metabolism is linked to tissue function; and how cells sense metabolite abundance to maintain homeostasis. Using approaches that combine classical biochemistry, metabolomics, cell biology, and mouse models, her team has made significant contributions to understanding the role of cellular reducing power (NADPH) in cancer metabolism, particularly through the regulation of NAD kinase (NADK). Her work has revealed novel connections between PI3K-Akt-mTORC1 signaling and metabolic pathways including nucleotide synthesis and redox balance. Analysis of Dr. Hoxhaj's recent publications shows a strong focus on mitochondrial metabolism, particularly the role of NADPH in powering essential processes like fatty acid synthesis and protein lipoylation. Her research bridges structural biology (with cryo-EM studies of NADK), cellular metabolism, and cancer biology, revealing how metabolic reprogramming supports tumor growth. A consistent theme across her work is the identification of how oncogenic signaling pathways directly regulate specific metabolic enzymes and processes. Dr. Hoxhaj has received numerous prestigious awards and recognitions for her research: Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Scholar in Cancer Research V Foundation Scholar American Cancer Society Scholar Pew-Stewart Scholar for Biomedical Science 2025 TAMEST Mary Beth Maddox Award and Lectureship 2024 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science Dr. Hoxhaj mentors a dynamic research team including postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, and research associates. Her laboratory has secured significant funding from multiple sources including the National Institutes of Health, Welch Foundation, CPRIT, and USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Her research on cancer metabolism has important implications for developing new therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer cells. The Hoxhaj Laboratory is part of the Genetic and Metabolic Disease Program at CRI, collaborating closely with other researchers at UT Southwestern including those in the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her team's recent work on mitochondrial NADPH has opened new avenues for understanding how metabolic pathways are rewired in cancer, with potential applications for multiple cancer types.
