Alan Hamlet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame's College of Engineering. His research focuses on integrating climate variability and hydrological modeling to address water resources challenges, particularly in urban and agricultural environments. He holds dual B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Washington. Prof. Hamlet's work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, including SWAT model applications for nutrient management in agricultural watersheds, urban flood resilience through nature-based solutions, and climate change impacts on water security. His research leverages advanced modeling techniques like bias correction for climate projections and EOF analysis for validating regional climate patterns. He has pioneered studies on cover crops' role in reducing nutrient runoff and green infrastructure's potential to mitigate urban heat islands. His recent publications highlight trends in flood mitigation strategies, climate adaptation for midwestern ecosystems, and the socio-political dimensions of climate action. Hamlet collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on initiatives such as the Great Lakes Runoff Inter-comparison Project (GRIP-E) and the BioEarth regional earth system model. His work bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy to inform sustainable resource management in a changing climate.
