Anita Thompson is Professor and Chair of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with affiliations in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and Environmental Chemistry and Technology programs. Her research combines field monitoring and modeling to address water resource challenges in agricultural and urban watersheds.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, University of Minnesota
- M.S. in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, University of Minnesota
- B.S. in Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota
Research focuses on cold region hydrology, urban stormwater management, and sediment-nutrient transport dynamics. Current projects include the Wisconsin Waterworks Excellence Project assessing utility performance and studies on freeze-thaw cycles' impact on soil stability and nutrient migration.
Teaches courses including Irrigation and Drainage Systems Design (BSE 473), Small Watershed Engineering (BSE 571), and advises Water Resources Management practicums. Leads field studies in Wisconsin's Green Lake watershed examining legacy phosphorus and land use impacts.
Recent publications analyze urban leaf litter phosphorus contributions and vegetation effects on engineered soil media. Research employs advanced techniques like sediment fingerprinting and radiometric analysis to track pollution sources.
