Dr. Jenny Wachter is a Research Scientist at the Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) within the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine. Her work focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. She combines bioinformatics with molecular and microbiological techniques to study bacterial persistence, phage biology, and antigenic variation. Education: PhD in Microbiology from Northern Illinois University (2016), followed by postdoctoral training at NIH's Rocky Mountain Laboratories (2016–2022). Joined VIDO in 2022 to establish the Wachter Lab, investigating Borrelia pathogenicity mechanisms. Research interests include: bacterial virulence factors, phage-mediated gene transfer, non-coding RNA roles, and Lyme disease prevention/treatment strategies. Her lab employs advanced genomic and epigenomic approaches to understand pathogen-host interactions. Key projects: Characterization of Lyme disease bacteriophages (e.g., ϕBB-1), tick transmission dynamics, and Borrelia genome organization. Collaborates on projects involving bacterial polyploidy and membrane protein visualization techniques.
