Nichole Scheerer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology within Wilfrid Laurier University's Faculty of Science. Her research program focuses on sensory processing, autism spectrum disorders, and the intersection of auditory perception with social cognition. She investigates how sensory sensitivities impact mental health and social functioning across neurodiverse populations. Her research examines speech processing mechanisms, decreased sound tolerance phenomena, and social perception dynamics in autistic individuals. Recent work explores how auditory processing differences contribute to anxiety and depression, while establishing connections between prosody perception and social competence development. Scheerer's publications reveal consistent focus on sensory processing profiles in autism, stigma reduction strategies, and developmental trajectories of social cognition. Her work employs multimodal methodologies including neurophysiological measures, behavioral assessments, and qualitative approaches to understand sensory-cognitive interactions. She supervises students through the Psychology Department's research programs and maintains active collaborations across neurodevelopmental research networks.
