Dr Ellen Hallams is a Reader in Defence Studies at the Defence Academy of the UK, part of the School of Security Studies and Defence Studies Department. She holds a PhD from the University of Reading on US-NATO relations post-9/11 and has lectured at institutions including the University of Reading and the University of Westminster. Her research focuses on US foreign policy, transatlantic relations, NATO transformation, and security studies. She has held roles such as Research Associate at the Norwegian Defence Institute and contributed to NATO studies across multiple decades. Her research interests include US leadership in NATO, Obama’s European strategy, NATO’s evolving role, and the intersection of gender with international relations. Notable publications analyze NATO’s post-Cold War dynamics, transatlantic bargains, and post-Brexit European security challenges. While she currently cannot supervise new PhD students, her work has significantly shaped discourse on global security frameworks and alliance dynamics. Dr Hallams’ academic contributions span international organizations like the OECD and geopolitical shifts such as Brexit’s impact on European defence. Her work emphasizes strategic alliances, burden-sharing debates, and the balance between US hegemony and European autonomy. She maintains affiliations with King’s College London and the UK’s Defence Academy, contributing to both academic and policy-oriented research.
