Alexander Betts is a Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs at the University of Oxford, holding the William Golding Senior Fellowship in Politics at Brasenose College. He also serves as Associate Head of the Social Science Division in the Department of International Development. His research focuses on refugee assistance, humanitarian governance, and migration dynamics in Africa, with interdisciplinary contributions to International Relations theory. Betts has authored influential books like Refuge: Transforming a Broken Refugee System (2017) and Survival Migration (2013), recognized as one of The Economist’s best books in 2017. He has been awarded the World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2016), named a Foreign Policy Global Thinker, and featured on Thinkers50’s radar list.
He earned his MPhil and DPhil from the University of Oxford. His work bridges academia and policy, including leadership roles at the Refugee Studies Centre (2014–2017) and advisory positions with DFID, IOM, and the World Refugee Council. Betts’ research projects, funded by grants from the MacArthur Foundation ($500k), Leverhulme Trust, and the IKEA Foundation ($1.1M), explore refugee economies, humanitarian innovation, and diaspora political mobilization. He teaches courses on refugee studies, humanitarianism, and migration at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including executive education programs at the Said Business School.
His research agenda emphasizes transnational governance and the adaptation of international norms. Current projects include the Refugee Economies Programme tracking 15,000 refugees in Uganda and a study on African diaspora political networks. Betts advocates for systemic reforms in refugee policies through media engagement, TED talks (3M+ views), and op-eds in major outlets like The New York Times and Foreign Affairs.
