Paul Betts is a Professor of Modern European History at St Antony's College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the intersection of culture and politics in 20th-century Germany, with expertise in material culture, cultural diplomacy, photography, memory studies, and human rights. He holds degrees from Haverford College (BA) and the University of Chicago (MA, PhD).
Research Interests: Betts explores the relationship between culture and politics through themes like private life in the GDR, industrial design in West Germany, and post-war European civilization. His work critically engages with visual culture, historical memory, and the sociopolitical implications of material objects.
Publication Trends: His scholarship spans monographs and edited volumes, emphasizing Germany's cultural history across both Cold War blocs. Recent projects examine post-1945 European reconstruction, while earlier works focus on domestic life, design, and memory politics in divided Germany.
