Professor Mirela Delibegovic is a Regius Chair of Physiology at the University of Aberdeen, leading the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She holds roles such as Director of the Aberdeen Cardiovascular and Diabetes Centre and Dean for Industrial Engagement in Research. Her expertise spans diabetes physiology, metabolic diseases, and translational research. Delibegovic earned a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Dundee and a BSc in Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and atherosclerosis. She has pioneered drug discovery projects and collaborated with industries like EpitogenX and Vertebrate Antibodies Ltd. Key achievements include developing AI-driven diagnostic tools and gene therapies for lipodystrophy. Delibegovic has received awards such as the FRSE (2022), Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards (2025), and Wellcome Prize (2018). She mentors researchers and serves on grant committees for the British Heart Foundation, Medical Research Council, and others. Her lab has produced notable PhD graduates, including Marina Souza Matos and Sarah Kamli-Salino, and collaborates internationally on projects like AI diagnostics and metabolic therapies. Public engagement is central to her work, including podcasts on insulin discovery and initiatives for gender equality in science. She advocates for knowledge exchange, bridging academia and industry to advance healthcare solutions.
