Dr. Kathryn Hentges is a Reader in the Division of Evolution, Infection and Genomics at the University of Manchester’s Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. Her academic journey includes a B.A. from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from Duke University, followed by postdoctoral research at Baylor College of Medicine. She has held roles as Lecturer (2004-2013), Senior Lecturer (2013-2018), and Reader (2018-present) at the University of Manchester.
Her research focuses on cardiovascular development, genomics, and developmental biology. Key interests include coronary vessel formation, left-right axis establishment in embryonic hearts, and the role of essential genes in congenital diseases. She employs mouse models to study genetic factors influencing heart and kidney development, leveraging machine learning for gene prioritization.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on genetics and embryology for undergraduate and medical students. She coordinates undergraduate tutorials and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Current projects involve collaborations on congenital heart defect genetics, supported by grants such as the BHF Centre for Research Excellence (2024-2029). She advises PhD students on topics like cilia function in cardiac development and splicing factor mutations.
