Nicole Jamison is a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at Macquarie University, specializing in play-based and arts-informed pedagogies. She serves as Course Director for undergraduate and postgraduate Initial Teacher Education programs in the Macquarie School of Education, and is Assistant Director of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education (CRECE). A Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), she holds a PhD from the University of Alberta focused on young immigrant children’s experiences through creative methodologies. Educational Background: Nicole holds a PhD (2022) and MEd (2014) in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alberta, an MA in Education and International Development from UCL Institute of Education (2014), and earlier degrees in Elementary Education (2006) and Medical Laboratory Science (2002). Research interests center on children’s voices through play and art, particularly for marginalized groups. Her interdisciplinary work explores cultural subjectivities, migration impacts, and pedagogical responsiveness. Key projects include examining newcomer children’s everyday lives through art and play, and investigating early numeracy strategies in preschool settings. Her recent publications focus on responsive pedagogical approaches, cultural navigation through creative expression, and the role of technology in multiliteracy development. Research has been supported by prestigious grants including Canada’s Killam Trusts and SSHRC. Teaching responsibilities include courses on play-based learning and professional experience. She has collaborated on projects with Alberta Education and co-designed professional development initiatives for early childhood educators. Her work bridges theory-practice gaps through co-design approaches with teachers and researchers. Key achievements include developing the RAISED model for intercultural practice in early years education and authoring influential reports on early learning numeracy strategies.
