Dr. Tony Silvia is a Professor and Director of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP). He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Birmingham. With over 35 years in media, Silvia transitioned from television news roles at CNN, PBS, and local stations to academia in 1988. His work focuses on broadcast journalism ethics, multimedia storytelling, and media history, particularly in sports broadcasting. He authored six books including Robert Pierpoint: A Life at CBS News and Power Performance . Silvia’s research has garnered national awards, and he regularly lectures on media topics globally. Education : Ph.D., University of Birmingham M.S., University of Birmingham Research Interests : Silvia explores the intersection of media ethics and storytelling innovation, leveraging his industry experience. His work analyzes historical and contemporary broadcasting practices, emphasizing the role of technology in shaping media narratives. He is particularly noted for studies on baseball broadcasting’s evolution and media’s portrayal of sports. Recognition : Three Emmy nominations, a Broadcast Education Association Award, and Fellowship in NATAS reflect his industry impact. His 2014 biography on CBS’s Robert Pierpoint was featured on NBC’s Face the Nation . Teaching : Teaches courses on reporting, media ethics, and multimedia storytelling. Current courses include Race, Gender, and Class in the Media and Magazine and Feature Writing .
