Scott Wallace is an Associate Professor in the Journalism Department at the University of Connecticut (since 2017) and an Affiliate Faculty member of El Instituto: UConn’s Institute of Latino/a, Caribbean and Latin American Studies. He is an award-winning writer, television producer, and photojournalist with 35 years of experience covering environmental conflict, vanishing cultures, and land/resource conflicts globally.
His research and teaching interests include environmental journalism, feature writing, magazine journalism, journalism ethics, and visual journalism. His work focuses on indigenous cultures, rainforest conservation, illegal logging, environmental conflict, and field reporting.
His publications and articles between 2020-2013 examine pressing issues in the Amazon, including pandemic impacts on indigenous communities, illegal logging, governmental exploitation, and conservation challenges. Themes of human rights, environmental policy, and ecosystem preservation recur across his work.
He has received the Explorers Club’s Lowell Thomas Award for excellence in field reporting. His affiliations include the Society of Environmental Journalists, Overseas Press Club, Investigative Reporters & Editors, National Press Photographers Association, and the Explorers Club.
As a journalist, he has reported from South/Central America, the Arctic, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and former Soviet Union regions, with contributions to National Geographic, Harper’s, New York Times, and Newsweek. His television credits include CNN, CBS, Fox, and National Geographic Channel.
