Professor Andrew Urquhart is a Professor of Finance and Financial Technology and Head of the Department of Finance at Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham , a position he has held since 2024. Prior to this, he was Professor and Head of the ICMA Centre at Henley Business School, University of Reading, and held academic roles at the University of Southampton. PhD in Finance, Newcastle University (2013) MSc in Finance (Distinction), Newcastle University (2009) BA(Hons) in Politics and Economics, Newcastle University (2008) PGCAP, University of Southampton (2014) His primary research interests include fintech, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, corporate governance, high-frequency trading, asset pricing, and sports finance . He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals such as Nature , Journal of Corporate Finance , and European Journal of Operational Research , with over 8,500 citations. His recent publications focus on cryptocurrency market dynamics, blockchain analytics, central bank digital currencies, and financial spillovers, showing a consistent and impactful research trajectory in digital finance and financial technology. He has received over £500,000 in external research funding and has earned several scientific awards , including: Best Paper in European Financial Management (2020) Best Paper at Southern Finance Association (2020) Best Paper at Cryptocurrency Research Conference (2018) Dean's Award for Leadership in Research (2017) Tom Fetherston Award (2013) Andrew has supervised 9 PhD students to completion and currently supervises 5 more. He has secured substantial research grants, serves as an associate editor for multiple journals (including British Accounting Review and International Review of Financial Analysis ), and co-organizes the Cryptocurrency Research Conference . He provides executive education on digital assets and fintech and has served as an external examiner for programs at Durham University, Queen’s University Belfast, and others.
