Peter Little is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Anthropology at Emory University, serving as Director of the Emory Program in Development Studies. His academic roles span teaching, research leadership, and administrative positions, including Department Chair (2012-2015) and faculty appointments at SUNY-Binghamton, University of Kentucky, and Emory. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from Indiana University (1983) and has mentored over 12 PhD students and six post-doctoral fellows.
Research focuses on economic and development anthropology, with decades-long studies in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia. His work examines pastoralism, border trade, and the impacts of neoliberal reforms. Notable publications include Somalia: Economy without State (2003) and Economic and Political Reform in Africa (2014). Awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Samuel Candler Dobbs Chair.
Awards and recognition highlight his contributions to African Studies and applied anthropology. Grants include NSF, MacArthur Foundation, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation support. His current research explores poverty perceptions in Kenya and Ethiopia, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to address development challenges.
