Niall W. Slater is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Latin and Greek at Emory University's Department of Classics. He holds a B.A. from The College of Wooster and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. His career includes teaching roles at Concordia College and the University of Southern California before joining Emory. He served as Department Chair (1991–1994) and directed Emory’s Center for Language, Literature, and Culture. Recognized for teaching excellence with the Emory Williams Award (1999), he was endowed as Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor in 2004.
Research focuses on ancient theater archaeology, the ancient novel, gender studies, and cultural impacts of warfare. Major publications include Spectator Politics (2002), Reading Petronius (1990), and Plautus in Performance (1985). He has translated works of Middle and New Comedy for The Birth of Comedy (2011). Leadership roles include past presidency of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South and Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Teaching and administrative contributions include curriculum development and interdisciplinary initiatives. His scholarship bridges classical texts with modern performance theory and cultural analysis. Office located at 222D Candler Library.
