David M. Christenson is a Professor of Classics at the University of Arizona, affiliated with the College of Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. in Classical Philology from Harvard University, an M.A. in Classics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an A.B. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan.
His research focuses on Greek and Roman theater, ancient slavery, early imperial Latin literature and culture, gender studies in antiquity, and translation/reception studies. Christenson has authored multiple critical editions and commentaries on Plautus, including Plautus: Pseudolus (2020) and Plautus: Casina (2019), as well as monographs like Hysterical Laughter: Four Ancient Comedies about Women (2015). He co-edited Sublime Cosmos in Graeco-Roman Literature and its Reception (2024).
Christenson has received numerous teaching awards, including the 2013 Graduate Education Teaching Award and 2012 Outstanding Mentor recognition from the UA Graduate Student Council. His courses include CLAS 301B (Ancient Roman Literature in Translation) and CLAS 4/532 (Literary Translation as Classical Reception).
His scholarly work emphasizes close textual analysis, performance contexts of Roman comedy, and intersections between ancient and modern reception. Current projects include contracted monographs on Plautus' Rudens and a general study of Roman Comedy.
