Salah Amasheh is a Professor at the Institute of Veterinary Physiology , Department of Veterinary Medicine, Free University of Berlin. He serves as Deputy Managing Director and Coordinator for International Relations at his institution. PhD from Justus-Liebig-University Gießen (1998) Habilitation in Experimental Biomedicine (2008) Key research areas: epithelial barrier function, claudin proteins, ion transport, and intestinal/renal physiology His work focuses on tight junction proteins (e.g., claudin-2, claudin-17) and their roles in epithelial permeability, inflammation, and drug delivery. Publications highlight claudin channel selectivity, barrier modulation in diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, and absorption enhancement strategies. Notable awards include the Forschungspreis des Fachbereichs Humanmedizin (2001) and Personal Research Funding (€75,000, 2007). He has contributed to 15+ seminal studies on tight junctions and barrier function, with citations in high-impact journals like Molecular Biology of the Cell and Biomaterials . Amasheh leads the Epithelial Barrier Research Group and collaborates with Charité’s doctoral committee. His grants and leadership roles reflect sustained influence in biomedical research and education since the 1990s.
