Francesca Caterina IZZO is an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics (DAIS) of Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Her research focuses on the conservation of cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on the chemical analysis of materials used in art, including modern and contemporary artworks. She leads studies on degradation mechanisms of paints, polymers, and historical artifacts, employing techniques like Py-GC-MS and FT-IR. Her work intersects material science and cultural heritage preservation, addressing challenges such as pigment stability, protective coatings for outdoor murals, and the analysis of historical drug formulations. IZZO collaborates with institutions like the Research Institute for Digital and Cultural Heritage, contributing to projects like Film Base Matters: A Material Approach to the History of Small-gauge Film in Italy (2023–2025). She also participates in international initiatives, such as AcCESS, fostering academic collaboration in conservation education. IZZO’s expertise includes the study of synthetic materials like nitrocellulose and PVC, as well as traditional techniques such as tempera painting. Her research often emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining chemistry, art history, and environmental science to safeguard cultural heritage.
