Martijn Hoes serves as Assistant Professor at Maastricht University with dual appointments in the Department of Clinical Genetics (MUMC+) and Department of Cardiology, conducting translational research at the intersection of stem cell biology and cardiovascular pathology. He earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biomedical Sciences from Maastricht University (2011, 2013) specializing in Developmental Biology and Epigenetics, followed by a PhD from University of Groningen in 2019 under Prof. Peter van der Meer. His doctoral thesis "Studying cardiac diseases using human stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes" established his expertise in in vitro disease modeling using pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of peripartum cardiomyopathy and iron deficiency through human cardiomyocyte models, with current emphasis on cardiovascular adaptations during pregnancy and their links to heart failure. His work integrates stem cell technology, cardiac physiology, and clinical cardiology to address pathological transitions in high-risk cardiovascular states. Awarded the prestigious Dekker grant by Dutch Heart Foundation in 2021, this research drives national and international collaborations investigating pregnancy-induced cardiovascular remodeling. The grant specifically targets identification of maladaptive pathways predisposing to postpartum heart failure. While active mentoring relationships aren't specified in source materials, his postdoctoral work involved extensive national/international collaboration networks. Current research leverages MUMC+'s clinical infrastructure for translational validation of stem cell model findings.
