Ian M. Paul

Dr. Ian M. Paul serves as University Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine, where he also holds the position of Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Academic General Pediatrics at Penn State Health Children's Hospital. His academic career spans multiple disciplines within pediatrics and public health.

Dr. Paul's educational background includes board certification in general pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics (2001). His research interests focus on primary preventive interventions for newborns, infants, and families, as well as clinical therapeutics for children. He has pioneered studies demonstrating that behavioral interventions delivered after birth can lead to slower weight gain through age 1 and lower BMI through age 3. His work on newborn weight loss generated the first nomograms for exclusively breastfed and formula-fed neonates.

His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on obesity prevention, responsive parenting interventions, infant sleep health, and pediatric treatment approaches for common conditions like the cold and respiratory syncytial virus. The INSIGHT study appears as a recurring theme in his longitudinal research examining childhood development and obesity prevention.
