Eliza Gallagher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University, with affiliate appointments in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (College of Science) and the Department of Education and Human Development (College of Education). She holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education from Clemson University (2016). Her research focuses on equity in STEM education, particularly through the lens of identity development and systemic barriers faced by underrepresented groups. She leads the Gallagher Research Group, which investigates strategies to improve academic continuity in STEM education during disruptions like the pandemic, and examines mathematics pathways to engineering in South Carolina. Her professional background includes a tenure as Associate Professor at California State University, Chico, where she co-directed the Chico Math Project and Project MATH. She has received notable awards such as the 2020 Clemson COVID Challenge Award and the 2016 ASEE Best Paper Award in Mathematics. Gallagher teaches courses in mathematics education, research methods, and STEM pedagogy, including MATH 1150 and ESED 8710. Her research group employs mixed-methods approaches to study topics like team dynamics in STEM courses, familial influences on engineering pathways, and the impact of high school technology access on college readiness. Current funded projects include NSF grants exploring two-year college responses to the pandemic and interventions to broaden engineering participation in South Carolina. She mentors a diverse team of graduate and undergraduate researchers focused on improving STEM education equity.
