Alan Coulson is a Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University, part of the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of South Carolina (2009), an M.S. in Geology from Texas Tech University (1998), and a B.S. in Geology from Bowling Green State University (1996). His research focuses on vertebrate paleontology and stable isotope geochemistry, particularly in reconstructing paleoenvironments of the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. Current projects include taphonomic studies of avian skeletal remains and the description of a new dinosaur species from Utah.
He teaches a wide range of undergraduate courses, including GEOL 1010 (Physical Geology), GEOL 1020 (Historical Geology), GEOL 2050 (Mineralogy), and GEOL 4910/4920 (Research Synthesis). His work has been recognized with the 2007 Graduate Student Research Competition award from the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Coulson's publications span over two decades, addressing topics such as geocaching in education, isotopic ocean circulation modeling, and paleotemperature reconstruction using marine fossils. His research integrates fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to understand ancient ecosystems and climate systems.
