Peter Harries serves as Dean of the Graduate School at North Carolina State University, a position he has held since 2017 after joining as Senior Associate Dean in 2015. A distinguished paleontologist, he advocates for graduate education while maintaining an active research program in Earth sciences.
His educational background includes a B.S. in Geology & Geophysics with Honors from Yale University (1984) and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1993) under Prof. Erle Kauffman. He conducted Fulbright-funded research at the Bayerische Staatssammlung für Paläontologie in Munich.
Harries' research centers on invertebrate paleontology with emphasis on biotic responses to mass extinctions and greenhouse-icehouse climate comparisons. His work investigates biotic recovery patterns, deep-time diversity controls, epicontinental seaway dynamics, and Cretaceous inoceramid bivalves. He integrates fossil records with geologic contexts to understand evolutionary and ecological history, providing insights relevant to modern climate change impacts.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on Cretaceous marine ecosystems, extinction dynamics, and climate regime effects on biodiversity. His work frequently employs taphonomic, isotopic, and biostratigraphic methods applied to Florida and Western Interior Seaway field sites, demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches to paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Fulbright Award for dissertation research in Munich
- President’s Award from the Florida Education Fund for diversity leadership in graduate education
Harries has mentored dozens of graduate students and secured external funding for paleontological research, undergraduate research initiatives, and graduate education programs. He serves on national committees including the Paleontological Society (former Treasurer) and chairs the Council of Southern Graduate Schools Outstanding Master’s Thesis Committee. As co-editor of Topics in Geobiology and editorial board member for Journal of Paleontology and Acta Geologica Polonica, he shapes scholarly discourse in his field.
