Mahmoud Abou Alaiwa, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine-Pulmonary, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine at the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa. His research focuses on cystic fibrosis (CF), airway host defense mechanisms, and translational lung disease modeling using porcine models. He holds certifications in Pulmonary Disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine and licenses from the Iowa Board of Medicine. Education: MD from American University of Beirut, followed by Internal Medicine residencies at AUB and Indiana University, and a Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Iowa. Research interests include mucociliary clearance defects, CFTR gene therapy, and the role of airway surface liquid in innate immunity. His lab investigates disease mechanisms in CF and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) using advanced porcine models. Recent work explores novel therapies like tromethamine (THAM) and AAV-mediated gene transfer to correct CF phenotypes. Key publications include studies on CF pig model pathophysiology, mucociliary transport mechanisms, and PCD porcine model development. He collaborates extensively with bioengineers and clinicians to translate basic findings into clinical applications.
