Dr. Karen Koy serves as an Associate Professor at Missouri Western State University since 2008, contributing to biology and earth science disciplines from Agenstein Hall. Her work bridges paleontological research with innovative science education methodologies. Her academic credentials include: Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago M.S. in Geology, Indiana University-Indianapolis Campus B.S. in Paleobiology, Bowling Green State University Dr. Koy's research focuses on taphonomy (studying bone weathering in modern vertebrates to interpret fossil records), evolution , and ichnology . She concurrently investigates science education through hands-on learning initiatives, developing laboratory activities for Earth Science courses and creating centralized databases of teaching specimens to enhance biodiversity education. Her projects examine how specimen utilization improves undergraduate learning outcomes in biology and paleontology. She collaborates with Dr. Tilottama Roy on specimen database development and integrates undergraduate students into research projects requiring foundational knowledge in biology or earth science. Participants gain practical experience in paleontological analysis and educational methodology design while advancing understanding of fossil preservation processes and science pedagogy.
