Dr. Paul Gagliardi is a Teaching Professor in the Department of English at Marquette University's Klingler College of Arts & Sciences. His research examines twentieth-century American cultural production through interdisciplinary lenses of drama, labor studies, and film. His scholarly work investigates representations of work, labor, and economic calamity in American culture, particularly during the Great Depression era. His book All Play and No Work: American Work Ideals and the Comic Plays of the Federal Theatre Project (Temple University Press, 2023) analyzes how government-produced comedies during the Depression portrayed complex labor norms and alternative work concepts. Current research projects include analyses of confidence schemes in contemporary television and the cultural mythology of Sylvester Stallone's early films. Dr. Gagliardi's teaching emphasizes historical context, interdisciplinary connections, and professional development across courses in American literature, drama, rhetoric, and film studies.
