Dr. Hannah Yelin serves as Reader in Gender, Media and Culture at Oxford Brookes University's School of Education, Humanities and Languages, where she coordinates the BA Communication, Media and Culture programme. Her 12-year pre-academic career in media production included award-winning work for BBC and UKTV, providing industry-grounded perspective to her scholarly work.
Her educational trajectory features a PhD from the University of East Anglia following professional experience in broadcast media. This unique pathway informs her critical approach to contemporary media culture and celebrity phenomena.
Yelin's research centers on celebrity memoirs, women in public life, and gendered media representation, with signature analyses of Meghan Markle's monarchy integration. Her forthcoming Palgrave book "Celebrity Memoir: From Ghostwriting to Gender Politics" examines autobiographical constructions of fame through feminist lenses. She actively investigates digital hate targeting female public figures and girls' leadership perceptions, bridging academic rigor with public discourse through global media engagements including Sky News and Grazia.
Analysis of her 2015-2024 publications reveals consistent interdisciplinary engagement across cultural studies, gender theory, and media analysis. Key thematic clusters include royal family feminism, digital harassment dynamics, and youth leadership narratives, demonstrating methodological range from textual analysis to empirical audience studies across high-impact journals.
Her research excellence has earned institutional recognition:
- Research Award from University of East Anglia
- Research Award from Oxford Brookes University
Yelin secures significant research funding while advancing academic communities through:
