Paul Palies serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Space Institute since 2021, focusing on combustion engineering for aerospace propulsion systems. His research bridges experimental and numerical combustion science with applications in hydrogen-powered aviation and gas turbine technology. His educational foundation includes: PhD (2010) and MS (2007) from Ecole Centrale Paris Maitrise (2006) and License in Mechanics (2005) from University Paris XI Dr. Palies' research centers on hydrogen combustion dynamics , swirl-stabilized flame mechanisms , and low-emission combustor design . He employs advanced methodologies including high-speed flame imaging, static/dynamic flow decomposition, and high-performance computing to investigate flame stabilization, combustion instabilities, and injector design. His work addresses critical challenges in sustainable aviation through fundamental studies of lean premixed hydrogen flames and gas turbine engine applications. Analysis of his 2023-2025 publications reveals a concentrated effort on hydrogen aviation decarbonization, with emphasis on flame stabilization physics, transient combustion processes, and practical combustor architectures for turbofans. The research trajectory shows progression from fundamental flame dynamics to system-level integration challenges in aircraft propulsion. Professionally, he serves as Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), contributes to the Propellants and Combustion Technical Committee, and reviews for leading combustion journals including Combustion and Flame and Proceedings of the Combustion Institute . His laboratory work combines experimental diagnostics with high-fidelity numerical simulations to advance reactive flow understanding for next-generation aerospace systems.
