Akthem Al-Manaseer is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at San José State University (SJSU), where he has held the Charles W. Davidson Endowed Professorship since 2015. He previously served as Chair of the department from 1999 to 2007. His research focuses on concrete technology, creep and shrinkage behavior, grout properties, and nondestructive testing. He has authored multiple editions of the textbook Structural Concrete: Theory and Design, a key resource in the field.
Education: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Glasgow (1983). Professional licenses include CEng (UK) and P.Eng (Canada). His work spans academic roles, industry collaborations, and international service, including a 2003 Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Sharjah.
Research interests include material behavior under stress, environmental effects on concrete, and sustainable construction practices. He has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed publications and holds leadership roles in organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (Fellow since 1995) and the American Concrete Institute (Fellow since 1997).
Notable awards include the Julian Chapman Memorial Scholarship (2007), Fellowships from major engineering societies, and recognition for academic contributions. He has advised numerous graduate students and led projects on infrastructure materials and nuclear waste disposal grouting.
Labs and initiatives: Oversees SJSU’s concrete laboratories and advises the student ACI chapter. His work on creep/shrinkage models is internationally recognized, with contributions to standards like ACI 318.
