Matthew Loewen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), University of Saskatchewan. He also holds an Associate Membership in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine at the same institution. Dr. Loewen is a licensed General Practitioner with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).
Dr. Loewen's education includes a BSc from the University of Manitoba, followed by a DVM and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan. His post-doctoral training spans Merck Frosst & Co., McGill University, and the University of British Columbia.
His research focuses on chloride transport mechanisms in airway epithelia, with long-term goals to define ion channel contributions to respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, and COPD. Short-term objectives include identifying genes and structural interactions of proteins that modulate chloride channels. He also collaborates on applied biomedical projects targeting influenza A’s M2 ion channel, using computational modeling, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and electrophysiology to study drug resistance.
While no scientific awards are explicitly listed, his work has been funded through grants from the WCVM’s Equine Health Research Fund and Companion Animal Health Fund. Graduate students in his lab gain expertise in molecular, biochemical, and electrophysiological techniques, highly valued by pharmaceutical employers. The Loewen Lab’s research integrates basic discovery with translational applications, emphasizing ion channel biology’s role in health and disease.
