Richard Vokes is a Professor of Anthropology and International Development at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the School of Molecular Sciences and School of Social Sciences. He holds roles as Research Affiliate at Oxford University, Trustee of the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI), and Director of the Ethnography Lab of Western Australia (ELWA). His research focuses on Anthropology and Heritage in Africa, Antarctica, and Australia, with expertise in Experimental Ethnographic Methods and Development Studies. He has led projects on Ugandan politics, photographic archives of Idi Amin, and media anthropology. Key research interests include the intersection of visual culture and statecraft in Uganda, heritage management, and the Indian Ocean Rim. Notable awards include the RAI's Curl Essay Prize and Sutasoma Prize. He is Editor of the Journal of Eastern African Studies and has authored over 300 publications, including books like Ghosts of Kanungu and Transition, Transformation, and the Politics of the Future in Uganda . Recent grants include studies on Ugandan elections, infrastructure development in Africa, and heritage projects along the Martuwarra River. He has held visiting fellowships at Trinity College, Cambridge and All Souls College, Oxford. Current projects explore Uganda's photographic history and global circulations of African heritage.
